MARIELLE SMITH
SENATOR FOR SOUTH AUSTRALIA
ALBANESE GOVERNMENT INVESTING $13.35 MILLION INTO THE REBUILD OF YADU HEALTH
Senator Marielle Smith’s visit to Yadu Health on 11 April 2025 bookends her visit on 9 March 2022 when she delivered Labor’s $13.35 million election commitment to redevelop Yadu Health’s clinic in Ceduna.
Today, she will be shown around the new clinic site by Torrien Lau, CEO of Yadu Health. The new clinic’s sod-turning ceremony was on 27 March 2025, following years of advocacy from Senator Smith and her Labor colleagues.
This advocacy culminated into an election commitment from Labor in 2022, which was regrettably not matched at the time by the Coalition.
An investment of $13.35 million from the Australian Federal Government and $2.5 million from the South Australian Government is seeing Yadu Health Aboriginal Corporation’s premises, which was previously in a catastrophic state of disrepair, converted into a purpose-built clinic that will support the needs of 3,000 patients each year from Ceduna and the broader Far West Coast.
A re-elected Albanese Labor Government will continue to strengthen Medicare, making the single largest investment in Medicare in its history to deliver more bulk billed GP visits. Labor will also make medicines even cheaper – with a PBS script to cost Australians no more than $25 under a re-elected Albanese Labor Government.
Anthony Albanese and Labor have also committed more than $793 million into women’s health, delivering more choice, lower costs, and better health care for Australian women, as well as provided a $169 million funding boost to SA hospitals, and delivering more doctors and nurses than ever before, including a record number of students studying to be a rural GP.
Quotes attributable to Mr Torrien Lau, CEO of Yadu Health:
‘With increased space, improved resources, and state-of-the-art medical facilities, this clinic will empower our people to take charge of their health and wellbeing.’
'Our previous facility was plagued by mould, asbestos, and the roof was severely damaged. The facilities were putting patients, staff, and volunteers at risk. This purpose-built clinic is what we need to meet the needs of our community’
Quotes attributable to Senator Marielle Smith, Senator for South Australia:
‘I am deeply proud to have fought alongside the local community and my Labor colleagues to secure our election commitment to have Yadu Health rebuilt and welcome the investment into improving health outcomes on the Far West Coast.’
‘This community has been long anticipating the rebuild of Yadu Health. They deserve more than what they had to put up with for years at the old site, and I was proud to advocate alongside them to deliver this investment.’
